This is Boo!

Boo assists children in practicing speech sounds necessary for improvement. Designed to encourage spontaneous repetition of individual speech sounds and simple syllables, Boo also promotes phonological awareness by demonstrating the articulatory actions within the mouth.

The application has been developed by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist, allowing children to utilize it independently or with adult supervision. Engaging multiple senses simultaneously, such as vision and hearing, facilitates easier navigation of obstacles and enhancement of articulation skills.

Who is Boo for?

Targeting children approximately aged 3 to 6 years old who require speech-language pathology or therapy support for speech difficulties, Boo offers a motivational platform to:
- Practice single speech sounds
- Distinguish between voiced and voiceless consonants
- Combine speech sounds to form simple words

Boo can serve as a foundational tool for improved pronunciation and is beneficial for individuals of all ages learning the English language. Additionally, the app is conducive to early reading practices by reinforcing the connection between letters and sounds.

What can you do?

The paid version of the app includes consonant sounds P, B, T, D, K, G, S, Z, SH, CH, F, V, M, N, L, W - pivotal for speech development. Depending on your chosen English dialect (American or British), there are five monophthong vowels available.

Within the application, users match sound cards to build a sound or simple two-letter syllable in corresponding fields. Boo then articulates the sound or syllable clearly illustrating movements of the mouth, tongue, and vocal folds during articulation. This visual aid encourages children to replicate and comprehend how sound syllables are produced.

Users have the option to record and playback their own sound production for comparison. By adjusting settings behind a parental gate, sounds can be enabled or disabled while also providing access to instructions and tips from the Speech-Language Therapist.

A mini-game is available for practicing identification of different speech sounds as articulated by Boo - either with sound cues or visually muted.
